Nahda Shehada, Ph.D. in Development Studies

Nahda Shehada earned her MA and her Ph.D. in Development Studies (Sociology of Law) at the Institute of Social Studies, Netherlands, where she presently teaches Gender, Culture and Development. She is also currently coordinating a three-year research project entitled ‘Islamic Family Law in Palestine and Israel: Text and Context’ in cooperation with Zurich and Bern Universities, Switzerland. Between 2005 and 2006, she was a researcher at the Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM) in Leiden and is chercheure associée at the Laboratoire d'anthropologie urbaine (CNRS, Ivry-sur-Seine, France). In 2005, she worked as a researcher at Bern University, where she co-organized (with the Institutes of Islamic Studies and Social Anthropology) a conference entitled ‘Islamisches Familienrecht im Wandel’. Dr. Shehada has a long history of NGO activism in the field of family law reform and worked for many years as director of the Gender and NGO Department of the Palestinian Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation.
