Nathalie Bernard-Maugiron, Ph.D. in Public Law, Senior Researcher, Specialist of Egyptian Constitutional Law

Nathalie Bernard-Maugiron is a senior researcher and the representative of the French Institute of Research for Development (IRD) in Cairo. She holds her Ph.D. in Public Law from Paris X University and wrote her thesis on the Egyptian Supreme Constitutional Court and the protection of human rights (published by Bruylant in 2003). She holds a Master Degree in International Human Rights Law from the University of Grenoble (France) and received her Bachelor of Arts in International Law from Strasbourg University. She works on the judiciary and the democratization process in Egypt and in the Arab World. She was a part-time faculty at the Political Science Department of the American University in Cairo from 2001 to 2005, where she taught Egyptian Constitutional Law, Egyptian Legal System, Comparative Constitutional Law of Human Rights and several other human rights courses. She is also part-time faculty at Cairo University (French Law Section). From 1999 to 2004 she worked as a senior research fellow for the French Cairo-based CEDEJ (Centre d'études et de documentation économiques, juridiques et sociales). In the beginning at the 90s, she was based in Geneva and systematically followed all UN activities relating to human rights, representing different NGOs (among which the International Service for Human Rights and Nord-Sud XXI). Her main fields of interest are the study of the democratization process in Egypt through legal and constitutional reforms; judges and political reform in Egypt as well as personal status law.
