Helmut Heiss, Dr. iur., LL.M., Professor of Private, Comparative and Private International Law

Helmut Heiss is Full Professor of Private, Comparative and Private International Law at the University of Zurich. Prior to joining the Faculty of Law in Zurich in August 2007, he was Full Professor of Private Law, Insurance Law, European Private and Private International Law, Comparative Lawas well as Director of the Department of German, Foreign and International Insurance Law at the University of Mannheim from 2004 till summer 2007 and served as dean of the Faculty of Law and Economics in 2007. He studied Law at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1987. Helmut Heiss held several positions as research assistant and has an LL.M. from the University of Chicago. He received his venia legendi in 1997 from the University of Innsbruck. After a guest professorship at St. Mary’s University Law School in San Antonio, California, and an associate professorship at the University of Innsbruck, he moved first to the University of Greifswald and then to the University of Mannheim. He is a member of a number of public bodies and academic institutions, including serving as the scientific board of the LL.M. course in Company Law at the University of Liechtenstein. He is the chairman of the Project Group "Restatement of European Insurance Contract Law".
